My research is centered around the premise that complex forms of life have evolved from simpler forms. This is observed on several levels: among cells (eukaryotic vs. prokaryotic), among individuals (unicellular vs. multicellular) and in all forms of social interactions (solitary vs. social). My research examines the complexity found among social insect societies, especially ants. I employ a number of approaches in my research, such as molecular genetics (including next-generation sequencing methods), microbial ecology (including host-symbiont interactions), chemical ecology and behavioral ecology. I also apply many of these concepts to the field of conservation biology.
